Meta Announces 10% Staff Reductions

1 Min Read

Meta plans to lay off around 10 percent of its workforce in May, as announced by Janelle Gale, the company’s chief people officer, in a memo published by Bloomberg. This will affect approximately 8,000 employees, and about 6,000 open roles will also be closed. These layoffs follow significant investments by Meta in AI, with the company forecasting $115 billion to $135 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, up from $72.22 billion in 2025. The increase aims to support Meta Superintelligence Labs and core business. Earlier this year, the company announced layoffs impacting recruiting, social media, sales teams, and 10 percent of its Reality Labs division. Gale stated that the layoffs are to help run the company efficiently and offset other investments. Affected staff will be notified on May 20th. A Meta spokesperson confirmed Bloomberg’s report but declined further comments. Reuters earlier reported the May 20th target for layoffs, with additional cuts expected later in 2026. In March, it was reported Meta was considering laying off 20 percent or more of its workforce.
