Perplexity has announced that its Personal Computer, an alternative to OpenClaw and other local AI agents, is now accessible to all Mac users through its desktop app. Personal Computer expands on Perplexity’s multi-model digital worker, Perplexity Computer, by bringing its capabilities directly to personal devices. It allows AI agents to access local files, applications, connectors, and the web for personalized workflows. This approach takes AI capabilities from the cloud to where most users perform their actual work. The launch aims to meet the demand for local AI agents, which OpenClaw popularized, but without its security risks. Initially, Personal Computer was limited to Perplexity Max subscribers and used a waitlist. Now, any Mac user can try it via the Perplexity Mac app. The software integrates with local files, Mac apps, and the web, using over 400 connectors securely on Perplexity’s servers. When used with Perplexity’s Comet web browser, web-based tools can function without direct connectors. Designed for always-on devices like Mac Mini, it supports remote access from iPhone, allowing task initiation and approval. Personal Computer is versatile, handling tasks across different apps, such as file comparison and drafting notes. Perplexity will phase out its older Mac app to focus on this new offering. The app is currently available as a direct download, not in the Mac App Store.
