I initially dismissed the Vivo X300 Ultra’s extender lenses as a gimmick, but now I’m captivated by them. The idea of adding telephoto lenses to a phone seemed frivolous, yet after spending a weekend with these attachments, I had an unexpectedly enjoyable experience.
The Vivo X300 Ultra, an update to one of the top phone cameras, is only available in China for now, with its global launch likely missing the US. It boasts impressive rear cameras and optional add-ons like a pro camera grip. The standout feature is the telephoto extender lenses, offering both a 200mm and a new 400mm option.
Equipped with the phone, camera kit, grip, lens adapter plate, and a borrowed crossbody strap, I explored a spring fair. Using the 200mm extender, I captured shots with depth and perspective usually unachievable on smartphones. This optical telephoto capability allowed unique compositions beyond what digital zoom provides.
Though challenging in certain scenarios, the camera system mostly succeeded, even in difficult lighting conditions. Switching between 200mm and 400mm lenses, I was able to capture detailed shots of a demolition derby as evening set in.
The Vivo X300 Ultra’s lens system provided surprising enjoyment and convenience, challenging my initial skepticism. The compact and light 200mm lens is easy to carry, making it an appealing option for future outings. I’m now eager for major brands to introduce similar concepts, transforming my view on extender lenses.
