Few genres thrive online quite like slow-burn romance. The anticipation, the yearning — it’s a storytelling style that naturally fuels fandom spaces and fan fiction archives. On WEBTOON, “The Mafia Nanny” excels at this dynamic. The hit webcomic has spent over 100 chapters creating tension between its protagonists, Davina and Gabriel, developing a dedicated fanbase along the way.

As “The Mafia Nanny” moves into its third season on May 11, writer Violet Matter shifts focus beyond romance. What began as a slow-burn about a capable nanny protecting the son of a charismatic mafia boss has evolved significantly. After the climactic chapter 98 (you know, that kiss), season 3 sees Davina taking a proactive stance as the narrative delves deeper into the Angelini family and their perilous environment. Fans can anticipate action and espionage, along with more intimate moments and quick glances.

We spoke with Matter about blending romance with serialized storytelling, her ongoing connection to fan fiction, and why Mikey remains the emotional core of “The Mafia Nanny.” Mashable offers an exclusive first look at the premiere chapter, “Episode 100.”

Season 3 seems to be a major turning point for the story. How is your approach different this time compared to previous seasons?

Violet Matter: My perception of the side characters has changed significantly. Initially, they were part of the story’s light-hearted elements. However, over two seasons, they’ve developed their own goals and backstories.

In season 3, it’s intriguing to consider the stakes for everyone, not just Davina and Gabriel, and how this affects the story’s progression. Because you’re correct: This is a turning point. Davina is now on the offensive, and she’s going to disrupt things.

Davina is a compelling character as she brings strength to a romantic narrative. With her taking the offensive in this season, how do you see her role evolving?

From the outset, Davina set her own terms. They had certain expectations when hiring her, but she immediately established her approach to the role, refusing to compromise.

We’re advancing that strong-willed energy to its logical conclusion. There were easier paths to take, but we’ve avoided those. Davina feels the need to meticulously address every detail before the conclusion.

She won’t be content with just somewhat ensuring Mikey’s safety. It’s all or nothing.

Protecting Mikey remains her primary objective.

Indeed, but she’ll need to come to terms with the rules she has bent to maintain that main rule. She’s been enjoying all advantages without repercussions, but some effects will begin to surface.

You’ve noticed changes in your understanding of side characters. Are there any new or thrilling elements for you as a storyteller this season?

We’re exploring much more about the Angelini family itself. We’ve expanded the world, especially in season 2, but now, we’ll focus more on the Don and uncover more about his ultimate plans.

We know some past actions that led to our current story, but not everything yet. This season will reveal more about his past and current motivations.

Will we learn why he’s obsessed with olives?

It started as a minor joke to add complexity to the antagonist’s character, evolving into a detail deserving a backstory. So, yes, there’s a reason behind it.

After 98 chapters, Davina and Gabriel shared a kiss. How has their relationship changed your storytelling?

Walking the fine line in season three was crucial because there’s so much remaining plot. While tempting to focus on Davina and Gabriel’s relationship, I must give screen time to other characters, ensuring the story’s depth remains intact.

Their dynamic will strengthen as Davina lowers her guard further.

The word “skinship” resonates. Why is it significant?

Visually, it’s crucial, especially in comics. Prose can capture intimate moments without relying on physicality, but in a visual medium, it’s prominent. Minor moments become significant.

Confidence in writing romance has been a journey for you. How do you handle romantic scenes now?

It’s challenging. While fantasy or humor feels natural, romance makes me overanalyze. Crafting character interactions reveals a complex interplay of dynamics, where accuracy is key.

Everyone’s experience of love is distinctive. Relating romance in an accessible manner while catering to diverse perspectives remains daunting. Therefore, focusing on the characters’ emotional needs is paramount.

Coming from a fan fiction background, how has it shaped your storytelling approach?

It influences my cautious approach to romance, given my fan fiction mindset: “Let fans write that.” My focus is on creating a rich world for others to explore imaginatively.

I’m wary of enforcing canon too strictly, preserving imaginative space for fans. Ultimately, fans will adapt narratives to suit their pref
