Threads Enhances Real-Time Engagement with Live Chats

2 Min Read

Threads is introducing “Live Chats” for real-time interactions during cultural events, the Meta-owned platform announced. This feature aims to make the app more timely and relevant. Initially launching within the NBA Threads community during the Playoffs, Live Chats will feature hosts like Malika Andrews and Rachel Nichols. Meta is first rolling it out to a limited group of creators, intending to expand access gradually.

Users can share messages, photos, videos, links, and emojis. Up to 150 participants can actively chat, while others can view and react in “spectator” mode. Threads struggled against X at launch due to missing features, but it has since improved with new tools and aims to compete by offering real-time engagement features that even X lacks.

According to Meta, “Live Chats” build communities around shared interests, offering dynamic real-time conversations during cultural moments. Users can join via a Community feed, shared posts, or by tapping a host’s live icon. Although Live Chats end after a certain period, they remain accessible for later viewing.

Threads will detect and remove policy-violating messages, and users can report problematic content. Hosts have moderation controls to manage chat participants.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to enhance Live Chats with features like co-hosting, real-time updates, and lock screen widgets. While also applicable to album drops, Live Chats have potential for diverse events like the FIFA World Cup, awards shows, and TV finales.
