Just like last year, the event will heavily emphasize AI.
Google I/O 2026 kicks off May 19, with AI expected to be a key focus. The two-day event will be livestreamed, covering updates on Gemini, Android, Chrome, and more. It will feature keynotes, demos, and “Dialogues” sessions discussing AI’s future. Last year’s event was lengthy, running almost two hours and covering Google’s entire product range. Gemini played a central role, introducing model updates, Workspace integration, and AI features across Search and Shopping.
Google also revealed its AR/VR plans with Android XR and introduced a new XR headset with Samsung and Qualcomm, alongside Android XR smart glasses. This year, more updates on these glasses and a potential working demo are expected.
Be sure to tune in for Mashable’s live coverage of the event starting May 19. Here’s what’s likely for Google I/O 2026.
A new version of Gemini
A major Gemini model update is anticipated, possibly a 4.0 release. This update would impact Google’s entire product lineup, setting a new direction for the company’s roadmap. Other tools like Nano Banana, Gemma, Lyria, and Genie might also see updates, along with a potential Veo 4 announcement, Google’s AI video generation tool.
New Gemini Live voice models
Leaks suggest Gemini will get significant upgrades in voice capabilities. Forbes reported that hidden models in the Google App are being tested, revealing seven new Gemini Live voice models with names like “Capybara” and “Nitrogen.” These models show differences in behavior, including memory, location access, and fact-checking abilities.
New video editing tools
Leaks indicate a new video generation model called Gemini Omni, which has appeared for select users. Omni supports remixing videos, in-chat editing, and template-based creation, likely evolving from Google’s Veo foundation.
Aluminium OS
Google introduced the Googlebook at The Android Show event, suggesting the launch of an Android operating system for PCs and laptops called Aluminium OS. Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat confirmed its 2026 debut. Chrome OS will continue, with Aluminium OS targeting a broader audience.
Android XR glasses
After debuting at last year’s I/O, Google’s Android XR smart glasses will launch in 2026. Two products are being developed: a display-free pair and a more ambitious pair with an in-lens display. Both are being created with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker, running on Android XR. We’re hoping to see both at Google I/O 2026.
The Android XR platform
Google’s design documentation for Android XR glasses suggests a platform built around natural user interfaces. I/O 2026 could reveal the full toolkit for developers.
Android 17
Google will roll out Android 17 betas, with a final release expected around June or July. App bubbles, a notable addition, allows quick app access.
More agentic AI
Expect a push for agentic AI, with systems handling tasks with minimal input. Google has been moving in this direction, and I/O is the platform to showcase this with Gemini.
The future of Google Search
Google will update AI Mode and AI Overviews. Last year’s AI Mode launch was significant, and AI could become the default search experience. New AI developments in search are expected.
Google I/O 2026 starts May 19 at 10 a.m. PT and streams live at io.google.
