What types of chips and in which gadgets? Interesting query!
Apple and Intel reached a “preliminary agreement” for Intel to manufacture chips for Apple devices, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Friday. Apple had notably transitioned from Intel-powered computers to Apple Silicon, but it seems the two firms will collaborate once more.
Intel named Lip-Bu Tan as its new CEO in March 2025, and the US government acquired a 10 percent share in the company in August.
According to the WSJ, it’s “still unclear” which Apple products will incorporate Intel chips. Intel’s spokesperson Kiana Ducey refused to comment. Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Bloomberg reported this week that Apple has engaged in “exploratory discussions” with Intel and Samsung about producing Apple’s processor chips in the US—currently, Apple partners with Taiwan’s TSMC for production. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned late last year that Intel is “expected” to commence shipping “Apple’s lowest-end M processor” by 2027. Bloomberg also noted in September that Intel had approached Apple regarding a potential investment and collaboration.
Update, May 8th: Intel declined to comment.
