Apple is said to be developing a unique 20th anniversary iPhone for release next year, but a recent report suggests that this won’t be a new standalone model, but instead a completely reimagined design for the iPhone Pro series.

The iPhone lineup has experienced significant changes recently. Last year saw the introduction of the iPhone Air as a replacement for the iPhone Plus, and this autumn will see the debut of the first-ever iPhone Ultra.

For some time, speculation has suggested that Apple is also getting ready to unveil a special edition for 2027, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone.

It’s anticipated to feature a quad-curved display that appears to be bezel-less. There may only be a small camera cutout, although some reports have indicated that Apple intends to eliminate all glass cutouts completely.

Mark Gurman initially reported at Bloomberg that this would be a distinctive ‘Pro’ variant. However, more recent updates from Gurman and other sources have indicated that it might be more like a completely separate model.

Nonetheless, a new analysis from Jeff Pu highlighted by 9to5Mac suggests that this 20th anniversary design is actually aimed at Apple’s Pro lineup. The report states:

> “we expect the 2H27’s 20th iPhone launch to shift the innovation focus to mainstream iPhone Pro+Max models, featuring 4-edge round display with ongoing design efforts on under-display cameras at front.”

This aligns with Bloomberg’s original findings, where Gurman mentioned a “daring new Pro model that incorporates more glass.”

If Pu’s insights are accurate, then Apple does not intend to create a special 20th anniversary iPhone. Rather, it is planning a unique, innovative design for the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in 2027.
