Influencing AI search could result in your site being banned. Google has updated its spam policy, classifying attempts to manipulate its AI search models as spam, including AI Overview or AI Mode results. According to Search Engine Land, Google defines spam as tactics used to deceive users or manipulate its systems into prominently featuring content, including manipulating AI responses. Some users attempt to influence AI search results with biased listicles or “recommendation poisoning.” Earlier this year, a journalist managed to rank as the “best hot dog eating tech journalist” in Google’s AI search using such tactics. A “GEO” industry has developed, aiming to enhance website visibility in AI searches. Google’s policy now explicitly labels these methods as spam violations, and sites engaging in such activities may face penalties, such as lower rankings or removal from search results.
