The Offline Desk Gadget That Finally Improved My Posture

Working from home presents its own challenges. Pets can be demanding, your back might ache from prolonged desk time, or you simply forget to move around. There are a few apps that remind you to move or inform you of poor sitting posture, yet they can be easily ignored.

I’ve spent nearly ten years at a home desk, constantly tweaking the setup — gaming chair, lumbar support, you name it. None of that ensures good posture.

Then I discovered Isa, a desk device by the German startup Deep Care offering a fresh approach. It monitors posture, hydration, light, sound, and movement, without using a camera or internet, which is notable in our surveillance-heavy world.

Here’s how it functions and what’s under the hood. Isa has a 5.5-inch IPS HD screen resembling a table clock. It’s powered by USB-C; it comes with a power unit, but any existing charger works, given its power consumption of about 2.45W.

The primary sensor is the Time-of-Flight (ToF) 3D depth sensor on the front — the same technology in facial recognition and some phone cameras — that monitors posture and movement. It enables beta features like counting how often you drink water. The sensor operates within a range of 0.15 to 1.8 meters. When placed on a desk, it tracks your movements, even detecting when you stand up. It also includes various other sensors: a ToF 1D sensor, a gyroscope, a barometer, a light sensor, a sound level sensor, a CO₂/VoC sensor, and a temperature and humidity sensor.

Getting started is simple — the device asks for some basic information about you and your work routine. Surprisingly, there’s no option to set it to India time (or any other Asian time zones). The company states Isa currently supports only EU and US time zones. That’s understandable for now — but broader time zone support, or at least a world clock feature, seems like a fundamental expectation for a desk device.

On the screen, Isa shows your posture with a squircle (a rounded square) that fills or empties depending on how well you’re sitting, while a water-tank-style widget monitors your drinking. If your posture is incorrect, the indicator turns yellow. The Apple Watch-style ring effectively serves as a reminder — seeing yellow or red instinctively prompts me to sit up straighter.

The device vibrates if you’ve been slouching too long, which I find acceptable as a slight nudge. That alert also shows if you’re leaning too far forward or backward, helping you correct your posture.

A similar widget monitors movement, suggesting you take a break if you’ve been still for a while, with guided exercises provided. Upon returning after a break, the movement tracker resets.

Deep Care opted out of using cameras to prioritize privacy, although this comes with some trade-offs.

If a bottle or object is between you and the sensor, it might misinterpret it as a person, logging you as inactive. Pets or housemates might also trigger it. Isa usually realizes when you’ve stepped away and switches to a digital clock display, although a manual button to indicate absence might be helpful.

Due to its sensor-based approach, the device occasionally stated I was stationary too long even if I’d only been seated for under half an hour. These are minor annoyances. Overall, the device made me more conscious of checking my posture, and the exercise suggestions are genuinely helpful.

The device uses a quad-core 2 GHz processor. It can connect to Wi-Fi for updates, though this can be turned off anytime.

Deep Care was founded by three former Bosch employees, initially selling Isa directly to businesses. It recently expanded to consumers, signaling confidence in the retail market for workplace wellness hardware and testing the viability of a subscription model paired with premium hardware for mainstream audiences.

Isa costs €299 ($354) with two subscription levels. The core plan (€4.99 per month) includes posture tracking, healthy sitting habit tracking, drinking habit detection, and an exercise library. The Pro plan(€7.99 per month) lets you monitor
