Android now includes a new anti-doomscrolling feature. On Tuesday, Google introduced Pause Point, aimed at reducing engagement with addictive apps on Android devices such as Pixel smartphones and Samsung products.
Pause Point requires a 10-second delay upon opening any app categorized as distracting, like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube. This pause allows users to reconsider their app usage and is part of Google’s response to regulatory pressures concerning social media and algorithmic harms. Countries and U.S. states have implemented laws to restrict minors’ social media usage due to its impact on mental health.
Google highlights Pause Point as a tool for disconnecting, with Dieter Bohn, Google’s Director of Product Operations, acknowledging how easy it is to lose track of time on distracting apps. While some social media apps introduced timers, Pause Point interrupts the app launch, providing a chance to think before continuing.
Google suggests using the pause for a breathing exercise or considering alternative activities. Pause Point can also recommend more fulfilling apps like fitness or ebook apps. Users may opt to set an app timer beforehand, fostering intentional app use.
Turning off Pause Point is more complex than traditional timers, requiring a phone restart, encouraging careful consideration before disabling it. Although Pause Point lacks the appeal of popular screen-time apps like Finch, its integration into Android may facilitate widespread use.
