Apple Engages in Talent and Intellectual Property Deal with Virtual Avatar Company Animato

1 Min Read

Apple has reached a new agreement regarding talent and intellectual property with Animato, a startup that focuses on virtual avatar software for video chats and educational tutoring. This deal, recently included in the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act acquisition database, permits Apple to recruit specific staff members from Animato, acquire a non-exclusive license for its intellectual property rights, and obtain its patent applications.

Animato is recognized for its software development that generates virtual avatars, notably exemplified by its now-defunct app, Call Annie, which offered video calls with AI tutors for language education. The arrangement signifies a strategic effort by Apple to tap into Animato’s expertise and technology without proceeding with a complete acquisition, a trend increasingly seen in the tech sector, particularly among AI startups, as regulatory oversight intensifies.

This agreement follows a succession of comparable deals by Apple, including collaborations with other firms such as PromptAI, WhyLabs, Mayday Labs, and TrueMeeting, which similarly concentrated on digital avatar technology. The partnership with Animato highlights Apple’s persistent interest in bolstering its capabilities in the field of virtual communication and AI-enhanced applications.
