Bluesky Addresses Outage and Discloses Cause

1 Min Read

Bluesky, a social media app favored by former X users, experienced a major outage on Thursday, April 16, due to a DDoS attack. The app’s team received reports of intermittent outages at 11:40 p.m. PDT on April 15 and worked overnight to address the issue. Fortunately, they confirmed that no user data was compromised during the attack, which impacted the app, feeds, notifications, and search. The company plans to provide more details by 1 p.m. ET on Friday.

Bluesky’s status page indicated the app was fully operational, with a 99.983 percent uptime in the past 90 days. DDoS attacks, which overwhelm servers with excessive requests, are common and can still create challenges for online platforms.

The outage affected users early in the morning, as seen in reports on DownDetector, a platform owned by the same parent company as Mashable, Ziff Davis. Bluesky grew significantly after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and, later, President Donald Trump’s re-election. However, its user growth has recently stalled, with daily active users declining. Mashable has reached out to Bluesky for further comment and will update if more information becomes available.
