California’s Cops Can Now Ticket Driverless Cars

1 Min Read

Starting July 1st, autonomous vehicles in California will be subject to traffic tickets. The California DMV’s new regulations permit law enforcement to issue a “notice of AV noncompliance” to AV manufacturers when their vehicles violate traffic laws, such as running red lights or not stopping for school buses. This update follows numerous viral traffic infractions and safety investigations involving robotaxis. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system is also under investigation for traffic violations. These regulations will also aid in preventing driverless cars from interfering with emergency situations, mandating AV companies respond to first-responder calls within 30 seconds and blocking AVs from active emergency zones via electronic geofencing. Additionally, AV companies can now test and deploy heavy-duty autonomous trucks under these regulations, which include licensing and training requirements for remote drivers and assistants.
