Roku denies the allegations. A plaintiff named Terri Else has filed a class-action lawsuit in California against TCL and Roku, claiming that their software updates render TVs defective. The lawsuit accuses Roku and TCL of providing updates that cause TVs to become nonfunctional without a solution. According to Else, TCL refused to honor the warranty for a TV she purchased in 2018, which stopped working in 2023. She alleges that another TV she bought also failed within a year. The lawsuit highlights issues with Roku software updates leading to screen blackouts and performance degradation. Despite the claims, a Roku representative told CNET that the allegations are unfounded. As this is a proposed class-action lawsuit, it may not progress further.
