Discord announced Nitro Rewards on Monday, providing Nitro subscribers with offers from gaming and lifestyle brands at no extra cost. Currently, Nitro enhances Discord with features like profile customization, HD streaming, and large file uploads, but it’s optional since the platform is fully usable without it. Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord’s co-founder and CTO, told TechCrunch that Nitro is designed to enhance Discord without restricting free users.
Available for Nitro Basic ($2.99/month) and Nitro ($9.99/month) subscribers, Nitro Rewards aim to retain subscribers by increasing value. Initially, subscribers will access Xbox Game Pass’s base tier, offering over 50 games and 10 hours of cloud gaming. Discounts between 15% and 30% will also be available on gaming hardware from brands like Logitech G. Overtime, Discord will expand partnerships for more offers.
“Nitro significantly drives Discord’s revenue and grows healthily yearly,” Vishnevskiy commented. “This is about enhancing the value for subscribers, serving as a thank you and improving business retention.”
Though initially a gaming chat platform, Discord now plays a key role in online culture, serving diverse communities like crypto users, activists, and tech communities. With over 90 million daily users, Discord faces complex online safety challenges like larger platforms. As part of its commitment, the company is advancing age-verification measures amidst increasing lawsuits over child safety.
