The Project Mariner experiment continues on in Gemini Agent and AI Mode.
Google has ended Project Mariner, an experimental feature aimed at performing tasks across the web, as earlier reported by Wired’s Maxwell Zeff. The Project Mariner landing page now displays a message saying: “Thank you for using Project Mariner. It was shut down on May 4th, 2026 and its technology voyaged to other Google products.”
Google first introduced Project Mariner in December 2024 and later announced updates allowing it to handle up to 10 tasks simultaneously. Over the past year, Google has incorporated Project Mariner’s features into other AI tools, such as Gemini Agent, which can archive emails or book hotels on your behalf. Google also integrated Project Mariner’s capabilities into its AI-powered search feature, AI Mode.
Earlier this year, Google demonstrated a new AI feature, “auto-browse,” which can perform multi-step tasks in Chrome, like researching flight costs. While Google hasn’t confirmed if it’s powered by Project Mariner, it appears to compete with the agentic web browsing tools from OpenAI, Perplexity, and OpenClaw.
With Project Mariner’s removal, Google might be making way for other AI features that could debut during this year’s I/O, starting on May 19th. Google didn’t immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.
