These devices have become up to $250 pricier since they first launched. Haley Henschel reports on May 12, 2026, that the prices of Lenovo and Acer’s premium Chromebooks have increased due to a global RAM shortage. Two configurations of the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 and one of the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 have seen significant hikes. Though a second configuration of the Acer model remains at $799.99 since its launch in September 2025, it was unavailable as of writing. Lenovo and Acer have not officially commented on these changes, initially highlighted by Chrome Unboxed. The article also mentions that Microsoft’s recent Surface Laptop price increases are due to rising memory and component costs, and Apple’s cheaper MacBook Neo remains a bargain amid these circumstances. The RAM and SSD demand surge linked to AI data center construction has escalated costs and led to dubious practices, such as counterfeiting RAM modules.
