Microsoft is retiring Teams’ Together Mode

The company is prioritizing enhancements in video quality and performance over adding new gimmicks.

Microsoft introduced Teams’ Together Mode during the pandemic to simulate a group conference room setting while users were actually at home. Now, this feature is being phased out in favor of a more straightforward Teams experience. Together Mode utilized AI to place users in a shared virtual space with others in the meeting, though it often felt gimmicky, such as when giving virtual high fives. However, it helped minimize visual distractions.

The transition will occur gradually, with the Together Mode toggle and related features like scenes and seat assignments being removed from the view menu. Microsoft aims to reduce fragmentation across platforms and offer a more streamlined interface, with fewer options and less user confusion. This change will allow the company to concentrate on enhancing video quality, stability, and performance.
