This is the first of 1,200 school districts taking on social media companies. Snap, YouTube, and TikTok have settled a lawsuit alleging that social media addiction has financially impacted public schools. Filed by the Breathitt County School District in Kentucky, the suit claims social media disrupted learning and triggered a mental health crisis, straining budgets. Settlement terms are undisclosed, but Meta still faces trial in the same suit, which is seen as pivotal for over 1,000 similar cases nationwide. Previously, Snap and TikTok settled another case where a 19-year-old alleged personal injury due to social media addiction. That lawsuit went to trial against Google and Meta, leading to a $6 million jury award for the plaintiff. Meta also lost a separate suit brought by New Mexico’s Attorney General for $375 million. Alongside financial settlements, there is a push for changes to social media apps to protect minors. Lawyers for the school districts emphasize their continued pursuit of justice for the 1,200 cases filed.
