Fai Nur, like many from her generation, was a “chronically online teenager,” deeply involved in virtual fandoms. The advent of ChatGPT in 2022 struck her with its potential, as she saw the possibility for AI to allow users to not merely watch or discuss their beloved fictional worlds but inhabit them. “The role-play and immersion fans yearned for was suddenly achievable on a large scale,” she remarked. Alongside her friend Amit Bhatnagar, an avid Minecraft game developer, and Pritesh Kadiwala, Nur co-founded Status AI, a gamified social media application. In this app, individuals can assume the identity of any character in any realm. Officially emerging from stealth last year, the app enables users to create a persona and enter a personalized social universe. Users can experience life as a celebrity, participate in their favorite narratives, or even run for president within the app’s multiplayer and single-player modes.

Statuses are player-generated, born from user interaction, where they accumulate followers as their narrative develops. This innovation has garnered $17 million in seed and Series A funding from major investors, betting on the concept of interactive entertainment shaping consumer social media’s future. Nur suggests that the era of passive content consumption is concluding, advocating for engaging, immersive experiences curated by AI. Rich Greenfield, a Status investor, notes media companies’ keen interest in finding ways to immerse consumers in their created worlds.

The initiative aims to redefine consumer apps in an AI-dominated landscape, providing dynamic, safe, and interactive experiences. This aligns with a broader industry trend focusing on niche communities rather than generalized platforms. Natalie Dillon from Maveron emphasizes the importance of blending intimacy, utility, and creativity, suggesting future social platforms will resemble multiplayer environments. With more than 13 million worlds and 5 million character profiles, Status shows strong early engagement, primarily driven by young women—the demographic often shaping cultural trends. The company intends to scale the platform with its new funding.
