The U.S. Department of Justice granted Donald Trump a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded sum, which could be used to compensate the president’s allies, potentially including pro-Trump insurrectionists prosecuted for the January 6 Capitol attack. The “Anti-Weaponisation Fund” was established in exchange for the Trump family dropping their $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury Department for revealing their tax returns. Critics, including late show hosts like The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng and The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, have criticized what they term Trump’s “slush fund.” Stephen Colbert remarked on the apparent lack of oversight, describing the fund as an “all-you-can-fraud buffet.” Colbert pointed out that typically, funds of such a scale are created by an act of Congress or overseen by a court, but this settlement allows Trump unrestricted use. Additionally, the Justice Department issued an addendum stating the IRS is barred from prosecuting claims against Trump affiliates, suggesting Trump granted himself immunity.
