Tesla Expands Robotaxi Service to 2 Additional Cities

1 Min Read

Watch out, Waymo. Tesla’s Robotaxis are expanding to Dallas and Houston. Tesla announced the move on X over the weekend, marking the company’s extension beyond Austin, where its autonomous rideshare services launched in June 2025. Maps showing where Robotaxis will operate in Houston (around Jersey Village and Willowbrook) and in Dallas (central/north area around Highland Park) were also shared. The service, despite encountering several issues, uses autonomous Tesla Model Y cars without human drivers or safety monitors, raising questions about remote oversight.

Tesla mentioned testing driverless rides in Austin since December and began removing safety monitors from some rides in January, which will bolster the fleet and coverage. They have also been testing Robotaxi pickups from San José Mineta International Airport, with plans to expand to other Bay Area airports pending permits.

Conversely, Waymo already operates in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, among other major U.S. cities. Despite a few setbacks, Waymo eyes a further 20 cities expansion including international targets like London and Tokyo. Meanwhile, Uber plans a $10 billion commitment to robotaxis in 28 cities by 2028.
