Canonical has unveiled the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon” Linux distribution, marking about two years since the introduction of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS “Noble Numbat”. This new OS iteration incorporates the freshly released Linux 7.0 kernel, GNOME 50, along with numerous updates and features.
As a long-term support release, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will receive support for 5 years until April 2031. An Ubuntu Pro subscription grants access to ESM (Expanded Security Maintenance) updates for up to ten years, extending support until April 2036.

Utilizing the Linux 7.0 kernel comes with advantages like support for Intel Core Ultra Series 3 “Panther Lake” processors, including Intel Xe3 integrated graphics and integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) optimizations, which also benefit Wildcat Lake processors (aka Panther Lake Lite).
Canonical emphasizes features like TPM-backed full-disk encryption, enhanced support for application permission prompts, Livepatch updates for Arm-based servers, and Rust-based utilities for improved memory safety. Ubuntu 26.04 also includes native support for AI/ML toolkits such as NVIDIA CUDA and AMD ROCm.
