University of Arizona Students Boo Eric Schmidt’s AI Advocacy During Commencement

Silicon Valley can’t seem to read the room.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt delivered the commencement address at the University of Arizona on Friday. As his speech touched on AI, boos interrupted him several times. With AI already a contentious subject, those entering a challenging job market have understandable apprehensions.

Acknowledging the unease, Schmidt noted that concerns “about machines taking over jobs, climate issues, fractured politics, and inheriting a problematic world” are “rational,” as reported by Business Insider. Despite this acknowledgment, Schmidt’s frustration showed as he urged the audience to let him speak his point.

Some graduates also expressed displeasure towards Schmidt due to sexual assault allegations made against him last year.

Ultimately, Schmidt advised graduates that “when offered a seat on the rocketship, don’t question which seat, just take it.” Such advice is unsurprising from someone who deemed AI “underhyped” just last year. This instance highlights Silicon Valley’s propensity to miss the broader societal sentiment. Gloria Caulfield also seemed unaware of public sentiment. Public opinion has increasingly shifted against AI, yet companies continue integrating it into daily life, disregarding consumer sentiments.
