Google unveiled Gemini 3.5 Flash on Tuesday, positioning it as their most advanced AI model for coding and autonomous AI agents. Announced at their I/O developer conference, this model promises capabilities like independently executing coding pipelines and building an operating system from ground up, as confirmed through internal assessments.
This marks Google’s pivot from using AI as a conversational tool to a more agentic one, emphasizing planning and building with minimal human interference.
“3.5 Flash combines unparalleled quality with low latency,” stated Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s chief technologist before the public release. He highlighted its superiority over the 3.1 Pro model, excelling in coding, agentic tasks, and multimodal reasoning. It is four times faster than its predecessors, and an optimized version enhances the speed twelvefold without compromising quality.
This efficiency is crucial for agentic tasks, where concurrent AI agents manage long-term activities. During I/O, engineer Varun Mohan showed agents collaborating on components to create a complete operating system within Antigravity, Google’s development platform and IDE.
Kavukcuoglu noted Flash 3.5’s co-development with Antigravity was to allow agents a native space for execution and productivity.
At I/O, Google also introduced Antigravity 2.0, a desktop application centered on agent-first development.
Gemini 3.5 Flash’s agentic skills are already proving beneficial, assisting partners like banks and fintechs with workflow automation and aiding data science teams with data environments.
Although capable of operating autonomously for hours, Google’s senior director Tulsee Doshi pointed out it might seek human input during decision points. The upcoming 3.5 Pro model will work alongside Flash, serving as an orchestrator, enabling Flash as sub-agents.
3.5 Flash is the default in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search worldwide, also powering Gemini Spark, Google’s personal AI agent for digital life management.
However, this level of AI accessibility raises concerns. Google faces a lawsuit following a tragic incident involving a man interacting with Gemini. The model now boasts improved cyber and CBRN safeguards and sensitivity calibration.
Gemini 3.5 Flash is available via Antigravity, the Gemini API, Gemini Enterprise, the Gemini app, and AI mode in Search.
