In March, AMD introduced the Ryzen™ 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, touted as the first desktop processor featuring stacked 3D V-Cache™ on two CCDs. As the new flagship, the 9950X3D2 boasts 16 cores, 208 MB of cache, and a 200 W power limit. It aims to deliver top-tier performance for gaming and professional tasks, bridging mainstream desktop and HEDT capabilities.

The 3D V-Cache technology from AMD, known for adding extra cache to the CPU die, enhances data locality by reducing latency in data access from system memory. This latest iteration places the cache under the CPU cores to optimize heat dissipation, allowing prolonged power boosts.

Earlier models like the 9950X3D faced challenges with task scheduling due to only one CCD being equipped with 3D V-Cache. The improved scheduler in the dual-CCD Ryzen 9000X3D addressed this, but dual-cache on each CCD in the 9950X3D2 further minimizes scheduling errors and enhances heavy workloads’ performance.

The key distinction between the current and previous versions of the 9950X3D lies in the cache size; the 9950X3D2 expands to 192 MB of L3 cache plus 16 MB of L2 cache, totaling 208 MB. However, there’s a slight reduction in the maximum boost clock from 5.7 to 5.6 GHz, probably due to thermal constraints. The 9950X3D2’s TDP is raised to 200 W and the socket power to 270 W, likely aimed at achieving more aggressive all-core performance boosts.

Despite a hefty price tag of about $900, the 9950X3D2 offers improvements in various applications, including content creation and gaming. However, processor performance in apps like Lightroom, Premiere, and After Effects shows mixed results against Intel’s 270K Plus, where Intel occasionally leads. Nevertheless, the 9950X3D2 shines in CPU-heavy tasks such as Unreal Engine benchmarks, coding tasks, and rendering applications, often outperforming its predecessor by around 5-13%.

Despite the advancements, the 9950X3D2’s steep price means potential buyers must evaluate whether the performance gains justify the investment compared to less costly alternatives like the 9950X3D or Intel’s offerings. However, for creative professionals seeking superior power and performance, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is a formidable choice.
