Apple is pushing the capabilities of its smartphones by broadcasting a Major League Soccer (MLS) match live, utilizing only the iPhone 17 Pro. Announced Thursday, Apple TV is partnering with MLS to air the LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match on Saturday, May 23, live from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The broadcast marks the first time iPhones will be the sole cameras for a major live pro sports event. Previously, Apple used iPhone 17s for certain moments during the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers broadcast in September 2025, regularly integrating iPhones into Friday Night Baseball and MLS broadcasts since then.

Only iPhone 17s with their three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras will capture Saturday’s match. In Mashable’s review of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Stan Schroeder hailed them as “the best I’ve tried” in a smartphone, praising the 8x optical-quality zoom. Apple plans to position iPhones around the venue to “capture live footage throughout the match, including team warmups, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and the stadium atmosphere.”

Apple’s MLS partnership is the company’s latest strategy to outpace streaming competitors, gaining a foothold in the live sports arena. The LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match will stream on Apple TV at 7:30 p.m. PT on May 23.
