Apple has settled a class action lawsuit for $250 million regarding its marketing of AI features before the iPhone 16 launch, as first reported by the Financial Times. The lawsuit claimed that Apple exaggerated the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, including an upgraded Siri, leading customers to believe advanced AI features were available when they were not. The complaint highlighted that Apple’s marketing influenced buying decisions with promises of features that were incomplete or delayed.
Apple denied wrongdoing but chose to settle the case. Under the agreement, eligible U.S. buyers of the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, might receive up to $95 per device.
Since unveiling Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, Apple has promoted an advanced Siri, expected to work like modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. The improvements could be powered by Google Gemini, though future updates may allow users to select third-party language models.
The settlement comes in anticipation of Apple’s developer conference on June 8, where AI-enhanced Siri is expected to be showcased.
