Apple and Michigan State University recently conducted the first-ever Spring Forum for the Apple Manufacturing Academy, highlighting the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into manufacturing processes. This event signifies a crucial advancement in Apple’s dedication to bolstering U.S. manufacturing capacities via its $600 billion Advanced Manufacturing Program.
The two-day forum, held at Michigan State University, brought together small- and medium-sized enterprises concentrating on AI and intelligent manufacturing. Attendees gained insights into practical AI uses in production settings, with firms such as Block Imaging demonstrating their applications. The initial day featured talks from industry experts, including representatives from McKinsey, Magna, LightGuide, and Medtronic, who discussed the hurdles and benefits of implementing AI solutions at scale.
A notable moment of the forum was a fireside chat between Appleās vice president of Product Operations, Priya Balasubramaniam, and Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, exploring how AI is revolutionizing manufacturing and the essential skills required for the workforce.
The second day encompassed off-site tours of various facilities, including Block Imaging, which maintains and refurbishes medical imaging apparatus. Participants witnessed firsthand how Block Imaging applied the teachings from the Apple Manufacturing Academy to modernize their operations and boost efficiency.
Looking forward, the Apple Manufacturing Academy plans to hold more sessions at MSU, focusing on data on May 12 and 13, and quality on June 9 and 10. An additional event is also set for July 14 and 15. These sessions form part of a complimentary training program for employees of small and medium-sized enterprises, addressing topics such as AI, automation analysis, and practical consultations with Apple engineers and university specialists.
