In the healthcare sector, building a company isn’t about moving quickly and risking errors. Longer timelines, higher stakes, and success hinge on navigating systems valuing precision over speed. Robhy Bustami, co-founder and CEO of BioticsAI, exemplifies this approach. His company offers an AI copilot for ultrasounds to detect fetal abnormalities, a field fraught with high misdiagnosis rates. Joining Isabelle Johannessen on Build Mode, Bustami talked about managing a regulated industry and motivating his team amidst challenges.
BioticsAI began modestly, with a functioning product developed for under $100,000, an impressive feat for medical devices. This prototype led them to win TechCrunch Startup Battlefield in 2023, gaining visibility and credibility. By January, they received FDA approval, paving the way for hospital launches and business expansion.
From inception, their product development considered FDA approval. Instead of post-development regulatory navigation, they merged clinical validation, regulatory strategy, and product development, working with clinicians and gathering large datasets before submission.
While the FDA process seems complex, Bustami recommends early regulatory engagement to align study designs and expectations. However, risks remain, especially concerning FDA rejection.
Motivating a team over extended timelines poses challenges. BioticsAI fostered alignment among engineers, clinicians, and researchers, celebrating R&D milestones from clinical studies to partnerships.
With FDA clearance, BioticsAI is deploying its technology in hospitals, planning expansions into broader reproductive health fields. The healthcare sector demands patience and discipline, but for dedicated founders, the reward is transforming care delivery.
