Google is enhancing its built-in vehicle systems with the Gemini AI assistant, replacing the older Google Assistant. This upgrade will bring more sophisticated conversational capabilities, vehicle-specific information access, and settings management. Initially introduced in 2020, Google affirmed its commitment to progressive improvements, and the new Gemini AI will be available not only in new vehicles but will also be rolled out to existing ones via a software update. Though General Motors recently announced Gemini’s integration in 2022 and newer models from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC, Google has not limited the update to any particular brand, indicating broader compatibility. The update, launching initially in the US, will eventually expand to include more languages and regions. With Gemini, drivers can expect natural conversational interactions for tasks like restaurant recommendations and playlist suggestions, along with real-time travel updates, message summaries, and specific vehicle insights, including EV battery levels. Eligible users signed into their Google Accounts in their vehicles will receive the upgrade option, promising future integration with apps such as Gmail, Calendar, and Google Home.
