General Motors plans to introduce Google’s Gemini AI assistant to about four million vehicles in the US. Vehicles from model year 2022 and newer, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models equipped with Google built-in, will be eligible for the AI upgrade. This will be done through over-the-air updates to GM’s infotainment system over several months, according to GM’s announcement.
GM describes this update as “one of the largest deployments of Gemini in the industry” and states that customers will experience an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to a more intelligent and intuitive AI assistant that continuously improves.
The assistant will perform tasks like sending messages, providing navigation, and suggesting music. The Gemini upgrade will enhance the conversational experience, allowing users to make requests more naturally. Initially available in US English, GM plans to eventually expand Gemini to “additional GM markets and support more languages.”
Additionally, GM announced reaching a milestone with nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles achieving one billion hands-free miles. The Super Cruise system allows hands-free driving on compatible roads in the US and Canada, marking its competitiveness with systems like Tesla’s.
