In the coming year, Apple has a lot in store. Recently, Mashable revealed the new features in iOS 26.5, and now there’s buzz about what’s planned for iOS 27.

A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests Apple will allow users to select third-party AI models for use with Apple Intelligence.

Apple plans to introduce an “Extensions” feature, enabling AI companies to support this through App Store apps. With companies like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic opting in for Extensions for their AI models, users can choose these for Apple’s Writing Tools, Siri, and more.

Gurman notes that third-party AI tools can enhance Siri with unique voices, although it might be powered by Google Gemini.

This feature is set to debut with iOS 27 for iPhone, alongside iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. We expect iOS 27 to be unveiled at June’s WWDC, with a release later this year during Apple’s iPhone event, where they may also introduce the iPhone 18 and possibly the iPhone Fold.

Apple faced criticism for its lack of AI strategy, being left out of the AI race. By partnering with companies like Google and OpenAI, Apple lets users benefit from AI without hefty investments.

However, Apple’s shortcomings in AI have been costly. The company recently settled a lawsuit for $250 million over claims of exaggerating Apple Intelligence’s capabilities.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in 2025 over alleged copyright infringement.
