If you’re not a fan of Nintendo’s recent ventures into big-screen films, redemption might be near. After the release of the poorly reviewed but financially successful Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it appears Nintendo’s collaboration with Illumination will persist in the coming years.

Universal Pictures Spain’s release schedule, featuring the title “UNTITLED ILLUMINATION/NINTENDO EVENT FILM,” hints at future projects. Though this title is temporary, the set release date of April 12, 2028, leaves ample time for finalization.

Potential spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ahead.

Speculation is rife on the internet about this movie’s subject. Although produced just two years post-Galaxy Movie, it might not belong to the Super Mario universe. Fans are guessing it could be a new Donkey Kong feature starring Seth Rogen. Safe to say, another possibility might be Star Fox, given the franchise’s current revival efforts with Fox McCloud in a prominent role in the Galaxy Movie.

A less exciting possibility is that the title is just a placeholder. The forthcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, slated for 2027 by Sony, is clearly not related, given its live-action nature and different production studio.

In summary, hopes are high for a fresh project to surpass the earlier two animated Mario movies in quality.
