The MacBook Neo May Not Remain Affordable For Long — Here’s The Reason
In March 2026, Apple astonished the tech community by unveiling the MacBook Neo, an economical laptop priced from $599, or $499 with a student discount. This decision was unforeseen from a brand recognized for its luxury prices. The MacBook Neo boasts an aluminum chassis, two USB-C ports, lively color selections, and a processor akin to the iPhone 16 Pro. Nonetheless, the low pricing of the MacBook Neo could be temporary due to increasing RAM expenses and a deficit of A18 Pro chips.
Former Bloomberg journalist Tim Culpan indicates that Apple could phase out the 256 GB variant of the MacBook Neo, elevating the base cost to $799, or $699 with a student discount. This possible 40% price hike for students might hinder the MacBook Neo’s early achievements.
The RAM scarcity is affecting Apple more than expected. The company has previously taken down certain configurations of the Mac Studio and Mac mini from its website, likely as a result of the ongoing RAM deficit. Moreover, Apple might launch new color choices for the MacBook Neo, but these could be restricted to more expensive configurations.
Another obstacle for Apple lies with chip maker TSMC, which may need to create a new production run of A18 Pro chips. The existing MacBook Neo employs a down-binned variant of the iPhone 16 Pro chip, yet a new batch would heighten expenses for Apple.
One potential remedy is to introduce a second generation of the MacBook Neo utilizing the A19 Pro chip. This would enable Apple to utilize down-binned A19 Pro chips, resembling the current approach. However, Apple may also choose to suspend sales of the MacBook Neo or concentrate on the pricier model, risking the momentum of the budget laptop.
