“Greenland 2: Migration” will send your cortisol levels soaring. This sequel imagines a scenario even more dire than its predecessor. Five years after the comet named Clarke threatened humanity, survivors now face new and Herculean obstacles to find peace.
The film begins with earthquakes, tsunamis, and radiation storms that hit the Garrity family in the first 20 minutes. Their journey becomes a dangerous quest to find a “promised land.” At its heart, this sequel is about the struggles of fatherhood as John Garrity, played by Gerard Butler, fights to save his family.
“Greenland 2: Migration” imagines a brave new world of horror and hope.
Five years post-Clarke, the world is scarred by impact craters and dwindling population. Survivors endure radiation, sharing resources in bunkers and theorizing about a new life in a pristine crater. John Garrity explains that their goal is the fertile land in the South of France.
Despite the optimism, nature’s indifference remains a threat. Marauders roam, and tensions rise in what remains of London. Through it all, John leads his family onward with the hope of a better future.
“Greenland 2: Migration” has a grimmer tone.
Unlike the frantic escape in the original, this sequel presents a more sorrowful tale. The Garritys, now trauma-hardened refugees, leave their bunker for a perilous journey. John’s health is deteriorating due to the radiation exposure, adding urgency to their mission.
Gerard Butler is riveting in “Greenland 2: Migration.”
Butler impresses as the steadfast action hero, facing challenges that test his resolve. His character, John, is driven by the need to secure his son’s future, even as his own time runs out.
Though the plot interweaves emotional elements with action, “Greenland 2: Migration” might not resonate as strongly as the first film. With its more somber tone, it reflects the grim realities of the world, presenting an engaging yet reflective cinematic journey.
“Greenland 2: Migration” is now streaming on HBO Max.
