Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones launched just over a year ago, and now, the brand is back with a new pair of noise-cancelling headphones to mark the 10-year anniversary of the 1000X line. Sony introduces the 1000X the Collexion, an upgraded headphone set enhancing design, comfort, and sound. The new headphones are priced at $649.99, a $200 increase over the $449.99 WH-1000XM6 headphones, which were already more expensive than the $399.99 XM5 headphones.

I haven’t yet tested the 1000X the Collexion headphones, so I can’t give personal first impressions on their performance or justify the extra $200. However, here’s a breakdown of what to expect, what remains from the XM6s, and what you need to know before buying the anniversary edition.

Sony 1000X the Collexion: What’s new

In a press briefing, Sony clarified these headphones aren’t meant to surpass the XM6 in all ways. Yet, certain improvements do justify the higher price. The 1000X the Collexion headphones come in two colors: platinum and black, with matching case colors. Sony headphones have upped the design by eliminating plastic on the surface, using stainless steel and vegan leather, and incorporating metal buttons for controls. They’ve widened the headband to distribute weight more evenly and increased cushioning by 40%. The ear cups slim down by five millimeters compared to XM6 headphones. Unlike XM6s, the Collexion headphones do not feature folding ear cups.

While the XM6 headphones excel in noise cancellation, Collexion’s noise cancellation is slightly reduced due to a more comfortable fit. Using a bespoke driver system of unidirectional carbon fiber, Collexion offers better instrument separation and high-frequency clarity. The V3 integrated audio processor powers the DSEE Ultimate tech for enhanced listening experiences, with music and game modes added to spatial audio. The battery life is slightly lower, at 24 hours instead of XM5 and XM6’s 30 hours. Sony’s redesigned carrying case for Collexion adds a handle.
