Google continues to integrate AI into Gmail. At the IO 2026 developer conference, they revealed an enhancement to the “AI Inbox” with conversational AI features. This allows users to inquire about inbox content instead of entering search terms. The Gemini AI-powered tool, Gmail Live, helps locate information effectively. Users can ask natural language questions about upcoming events, appointments, or travel details within their inboxes, avoiding complex keyword searches. Gmail Live can handle follow-up queries and adapt to interruptions, as stated by Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail’s product lead, during Google I/O. This showcases how AI can enhance user experiences, addressing AI’s perceived value amidst rising infrastructure costs. In demonstrations, Gmail Live answered nuanced queries and inferred details from emails. Similar voice features will be available in Google Keep. Gmail Live differs from standard search, offering an alternative, not a replacement. Previously, Google responded to user pushback over AI-only updates by making AI features optional in Google Photos. Gmail is also receiving enhancements like ready-to-send drafts and task management. The AI Inbox, initially for Google AI Ultra subscribers, will be accessible to Pro and Plus tiers, summarizing tasks and messages. Gmail Live will launch for Google AI Ultra users later this summer.
