The next evolution of The Verge’s homepage is here

We’ve been continuously enhancing The Verge to better serve you. Our 2022 homepage update aimed to make reading The Verge enjoyable each visit, featuring the homepage StoryStream and Quick Posts, to foster a reimagined relationship with our audience. As the landscape has shifted, with Twitter’s decline, AI’s rise, and evolving news discovery trends, we realize our readers have diverse habits. Some engage daily, others weekly, and access varies by homepage, RSS, or newsletters. Catering to everyone with one static homepage is challenging, leading to concerns about the visibility of our prime content. Stories often moved too quickly through the chronological feed, risking being overlooked.

Our latest update aims to balance our magazine-style and news flow content effectively. On desktop, we’ve distinguished these modes more: the left side highlights top stories and thematic story sets, while the right retains a chronological feed. This update facilitates easy navigation between comprehensive reports and a dynamic news stream. We’re also featuring collections like Most Popular and Key Areas, adapting this approach for mobile with toggleable feeds.

Our vision includes a comprehensive product updates page and user research group to hear from you directly and test ideas before broader rollout. We recognize this homepage won’t be perfect for everyone yet, but it’s designed for growth and evolution. We’re eager to explore new features, like customizable default homepage views, read/unread indicators, and new organizational methods.

Beyond the homepage, we’re working on dark mode, a new app, and federated systems. Progress will take time, but we’re committed to making The Verge fun to read every visit, collaborating openly with our readers to reach this goal.

This update reflects efforts from our product team and support from editorial, audience, art and design, and customer support, with close collaboration from Vox Media teams. Special thanks to Nilay, Helen, and David for their guidance. Stay tuned to our product updates feed for the latest developments and share your feedback—your insights are invaluable!
