OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, face accusations of negligence and releasing GPT-4o with a flawed design. Seven families of Tumbler Ridge school shooting victims have sued them for not alerting police to the shooter’s ChatGPT activity, allegedly to protect the company’s reputation and IPO. The Wall Street Journal reported OpenAI considered notifying police about the suspect’s discussions on gun violence but chose not to. The lawsuits claim OpenAI lied about banning the suspect, who was able to create a new account. The plaintiffs argue GPT-4o’s defective design contributed to the shooting. OpenAI and Altman are also sued for wrongful death and aiding a mass shooting. Altman apologized, stating they will work with governments to prevent future incidents.
