UK Banks to Receive Mythos Briefing Within Days

The Bank of England’s Cross Market Operational Resilience Group will soon convene to brief key UK banks, insurers, and exchanges about Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview. This AI model, not yet publicly released, can autonomously identify and exploit vulnerabilities in major operating systems and web browsers, prompting emergency sessions by the US Treasury, the Federal Reserve, and the Bank of Canada.

Senior executives from UK financial institutions will be briefed by the Bank of England, the Financial Conduct Authority, HM Treasury, and the National Cyber Security Centre on the cybersecurity implications of Anthropic’s AI model, which has already led to high-level meetings in the US and Canada.

The Claude Mythos Preview model is on the agenda for the Bank of England’s upcoming Cross Market Operational Resilience Group meetings. The CMORG includes CEOs of the UK’s largest banks, financial infrastructure providers, insurers, and representatives from the Treasury, BoE, FCA, and NCSC.

The US Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve Chair recently addressed US bank heads on Mythos’s implications, showing a focus on financial stability over tech policy. JPMorgan Chase CEO did not attend but the bank is a launch partner for Anthropic’s Project Glasswing. The Bank of Canada has also discussed the topic with Canadian banks.

Anthropic’s Mythos Preview is said to identify thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities across major systems. It offers early access through Project Glasswing to about 40–50 organizations, including major tech companies, to allow time for vulnerability patches.

Security expert Bruce Schneier criticized Anthropic’s approach as a PR move, while former UK NCSC head Ciaran Martin saw potential to fix hidden internet bugs quickly. Meanwhile, Anthropic disputes claims regarding defense risks with the US government.

Despite disputes, Anthropic is considered a key partner in protecting financial infrastructure. BoE Governor Andrew Bailey highlighted Mythos as a growing cybersecurity threat. Anthropic intends to provide UK financial institutions with access to the Mythos model next week.
