Double Fine, recognized for its unique games, followed the release of a game about a sentient lighthouse with a new multiplayer brawler centered around pottery. Previously, after being acquired by Microsoft in 2019, there was concern about Double Fine’s direction as they focused primarily on a sequel to “Psychonauts.” However, the recent release of “Keeper” and the new game “Kiln” marks a creative resurgence for the studio.
“Kiln” is a four-on-four competitive game where teams try to extinguish the opposing team’s kiln by collecting and using water found across the map. The game’s objectives are straightforward, similar to “League of Legends,” but simplified with no leveling up or minion farming—just players competing to carry water across the levels.
The standout feature of “Kiln” is its pottery theme. Players control cute spirit characters that must inhabit pots to compete, with each pottery type serving as a character class. The game’s tactile element allows players to sculpt pots using a virtual pottery wheel, customizing them with add-ons and glazes. Players can create multiple pots and select three to use during matches, adding strategy based on pot capabilities.
While gameplay goals are direct, matches are chaotic, with fast respawns and simple controls. Levels are designed with unique elements like boats and conveyor belts to enhance the challenge and maintain the chaos. One standout feature includes a level with a disco floor that temporarily disables players caught on the tiles, adding unpredictability.
Though not a shooter, “Kiln” is reminiscent of “Splatoon,” making the genre approachable and fun, requiring teamwork without necessitating voice chat. Players must coordinate defense and offense to win matches, capturing the essence of a quirky sports game.
Despite “Kiln” having a single game mode, leaving room for potential variety, it delivers a compact and entertaining multiplayer experience. The game is characterized by its style and entertaining silliness, embodying Double Fine’s trademark uniqueness and creativity.
Kiln is now available on PS5, Xbox, and PC.
