YouTube Expands AI Deepfake Detection Tool to All Adult Users

1 Min Read

YouTube’s AI likeness detection tool is now accessible to all users aged 18 and above, allowing them to search for deepfakes of themselves on the platform. This feature performs a facial scan to identify matches on YouTube. If a match is found, users receive an alert with an option to request content removal. Previously tested with creators, politicians, journalists, and celebrities, this expansion empowers the general public to monitor their potential deepfake presence on YouTube. Takedown requests are assessed by YouTube’s privacy policy, considering criteria like content realism and identification capability, with exceptions for parody or satire. Users may opt-out and have their data deleted. The announcement was made on YouTube’s creator forum, with spokesperson Jack Malon confirming no specific requirements for “creators” to be eligible. Malon emphasized equal protection for long-time and new creators alike. While deepfakes often involve public figures, they also pose risks to private individuals, exemplified by incidents involving teenagers being deepfaked or legal actions against companies like xAI for generating harmful content.
