BMW i Ventures Launches New $300M Fund with AI as a Key Partner

2 Min Read

BMW i Ventures has introduced a new $300 million fund focused on AI’s transformative potential in the automotive industry. The investment arm of BMW AG, now managing $1.1 billion in total capital, will target early-stage to Series B startups in North America and Europe. These startups will focus on agentic AI, physical AI, industrial software, advanced materials, and manufacturing and supply chain technologies. The challenge lies in identifying AI startups not merely capitalizing on trends.

According to Marcus Behrendt, managing partner at BMW i Ventures, the firm’s strategy adapts to emerging trends that will shape the future. The venture’s first fund in 2016 concentrated on autonomous vehicles and digital tech, while its second fund in 2021 emphasized sustainability and the supply chain. Behrendt and Kaspar Sage, another managing partner based in Silicon Valley, view AI as a fundamental trend influencing other technologies, reshaping robotics, software development, and car production.

An example is Synera, a German company supported by BMW i Ventures, using AI to enhance engineering processes. Synera’s platform, incorporating AI agents, optimizes engineering tasks by automating design workflows and dramatically reducing time from weeks to minutes.

Despite the new fund’s AI focus, the firm remains invested in other areas like advanced materials and circular supply chains, with AI seen as expanding sustainability options. The third fund has yet to make investments, but the second fund includes many AI-focused startup investments, with over 35 total investments to date.
