Friendster is Back, but Only for In-Person Connections!

Friendster, the original social network, has made a comeback.

Friendster, launched approximately 24 years after its initial debut, is back with a new approach: users can only connect with real-life friends. The new platform, led by Mike Carson, claims to be free of ads and algorithms, focusing solely on genuine connections. Available as an iOS app, users find a blank slate upon sign-up, and connections are made by physically tapping phones with another user.

Friendster, first launched in March 2002 by Jonathan Abrams, was one of the original social networking sites. Although it initially found success, it struggled against competitors and pivoted to a social gaming site before shutting down in 2015. The domain was later acquired by Carson for $20,000 in Bitcoin and plans include features like Friends of Friends and Fading Connection to promote in-person interactions.

Carson’s vision emphasizes real-world connections, offering a unique twist to social networking. To succeed, Friendster needs users to embrace this new model, despite seeing empty space until making real-life connections.
