AI-generated descriptions are coming to sponsored products in Search.
On May 20, 2026, Google’s AI-powered Search, including advertisement enhancements, will have AI-generated explanations. With Google’s Gemini AI, when searching for products, the AI will present relevant suggestions with custom descriptions explaining why a particular choice is ideal.
This update follows Google’s recent release of a new Search feature for comprehensive queries, emphasizing AI-generated results. For example, a search for a “compact espresso pod machine” might yield a Nespresso Vertuo Up under “Sponsored Product,” with an AI-generated description highlighting its features such as capsule compatibility, fast heat up, and customization options.
Search will eventually feature ads with a chatbot. An “Ask a question” button will allow users to interact with Gemini, the AI chatbot, which will answer queries based on information from product websites and possibly prompt users to connect with the business.
Google is experimenting with new ad formats in its AI Style Search. Previously introduced as a “sponsored” result last year, these enhanced ad formats will now effectively display potentially sponsored products by responding to specific queries like home fragrance solutions. The AI Mode may show an ad for an air freshener with a complete product description, covering the screen when scrolled over.
Moreover, Google is testing ad formats that clearly highlight sponsored products or services within recommendation lists. AI Mode could provide an ad for a language-learning service, like Duolingo, at the list’s conclusion, supplemented with details about its features.
Google’s VP of ads and commerce, Vidhya Srinivasan, states, “We’re reinventing ads for AI Search so they feel like helpful additions to your conversation. These next-generation ad formats close the gap between a person’s initial question and their final purchase, while making it easier to discover new brands along the way.”
