Google introduced a new “Create My Widget” feature for Android on Tuesday, enabling users to code custom widgets using natural language. This feature will initially be available this summer on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. Users can describe their desired widget, like asking for “three high-protein meal prep recipes every week,” resulting in a custom dashboard for their home screen. Cyclists focused on wind speed and rain can create a weather widget displaying those stats. Gemini can extract web data and connect with Google apps such as Gmail and Calendar for a personalized dashboard, like organizing family reunion details in Berlin. The feature is part of Google’s effort to integrate generative AI into Android, enhancing customization for users. Ben Greenwood, Director of PM, Android Core Experiences, compared it to having a personal assistant repeatedly providing answers. The announcement coincided with the unveiling of Gemini Intelligence, which includes advanced autofill and AI-powered voice dictation for Gboard.
