1 Min Read

Honda has introduced prototypes of two new hybrid models, the Accord sedan and the Acura RDX SUV, at its annual business briefing. These vehicles are built on a new platform that will debut next year. The RDX, announced earlier as Honda’s first SUV with the next-gen two-motor hybrid system, highlights Honda’s shift in focus. Honda has abandoned its goal of 20% EV sales by 2030, now aiming for 100% EV and fuel cell sales by 2040, reallocating resources to hybrid models. Honda plans to launch 15 next-gen hybrid models globally by March 31, 2030, primarily in North America with large-size models arriving in 2029. Efforts to reduce hybrid system costs by 30% aim to improve fuel economy by over 10%. Honda will launch an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) by 2028 in over 15 models. The company is reallocating Ohio plant capacity for gas and hybrid vehicles and working with LG to convert EV battery lines to hybrid production. In Japan, Honda will expand its EV lineup, focusing on the kei car category, with an electric N-BOX minicar expected in 2028. Despite a significant writedown in its EV investments, Honda projects its EV losses will be resolved by 2029, with plans for reevaluation in 2030.
