Netflix Encourages You to Watch ‘Clips,’ Its TikTok-Inspired Vertical Video Feed

Introducing Netflix Clips: Netflix is updating its mobile app with a new feature called Clips, a vertical video stream that showcases highlights from Netflix’s original content to help users find new shows and movies. Described as a “personalized highlight reel,” Clips presents short segments from various programs, allowing users to quickly explore what grabs their interest without excessive scrolling.

When on the move, viewers might not want to watch a full episode, but a brief curated clip can provide a quick entertainment fix, similar to Netflix’s 2021 feature, Fast Laughs.

Vertical video, popularized by platforms like TikTok, now dominates social media, further evidenced by LinkedIn’s incorporation. Even the microdrama sector, consisting of episodes under ten minutes, is finding success in the U.S., influenced by Asian markets and aligning with the trend of consuming content via vertical feeds.

Streaming services like Peacock and Tubi are also adapting to include vertical video on mobile apps. At TechCrunch Disrupt, Netflix’s Chief Product and Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone discussed the company’s vertical video experimentation, emphasizing that Netflix isn’t looking to mimic TikTok but rather focuses on delivering entertainment that resonates uniquely with its audience.

Stone highlighted that Netflix’s strategy is not about replicating other platforms’ content styles but rather centering on the distinctive experiences valued by its viewers.
